C.S.I. ST. JAMES CHURCH, AYANAVARAM SUNDAY SCHOOL 2017-2018
Our Goals: Our Sunday school is a place where children love to come every Sunday – to sing melodious songs,learning to pray, and understand the scriptures in order to grow closer to God.Our Sunday school teachers introduce children to the Biblical events, people and practices through the eyes of Jesus thus connecting God’s Story with their own. They help children discover the purpose that God has for each one of them by showing them the reality of an inner realm where God speaks to them and through them. They nurture creativity through crafts, projects, skits, and more.
The academic year for 2017-2018 commenced on 11th June’17 with 1 superintendent, 29 teachers, 2 volunteers and around 250 children. The Diocesan theme for this year’s curriculum is “WALKING WITH JESUS.”Children are graded as per their age group into Beginner, Primary, Junior, Intermediate and senior classes. English and Tamil are the two mediums of teaching. Each year, a Missionary Biography is also taught for Junior, Inter and Senior children. This year, the lifehistory and contributions of Sadhu Sundar Singh, ‘The Apostle with the Bleeding Feet” is being taught.
Participation in Church activities: Our Sunday school participates in all the events and activities of our church. A few tit-bits: In July, teachers put up a variety of stalls and contributed 60, 000/- for the Mission Festival.The Sunday school raised Rupees one lakh during the Harvest Festival held in September.
Participation in the Inter- Church Sunday School activities: In the Diocesan Mission Festivalheld at St. George’s Cathedral on 8th July, Miss. Hannah Felin secured the 3rd prize in the memory verse competition. In August, our children participated in Bible Quiz, Dumb Charades, Skit, Preaching, Drawing, and Reference for Song along with Singingcompetitions conducted by Youth for Christ, Chennai and bagged prizes in most events. They also secured many prizes in the yearly memory verse competitions organised by Scripture Union on 27th August. They secured third place in the Diocesan Children’s Rally held on 29th September at the L.I.T.E. auditorium In the Lily Pushpam Vedanayagam Memorial QuizCompetition held on 1st October at St. John’s Church, Perambur, Miss. Benitta Chandra secured the first prize.
Events of the Sunday School: Talent Day was held on 8th October where children displayed their talents in the form of dance, drama and debate.
Children’s Day was celebrated on 12th November and manycompetitions were held to commemorate it. The children also conducted the church service in English and Tamil. A retreat for children was held the following week which was conducted by Scripture Union. Children were taught new songs, a puppet show and skit were performed and separate sessions were conducted for different age groups. A special session for teachers was also conducted enabling them to revive, renew and recharge their commitment towards this noble ministry.
Christmas and December are most awaited as a host of celebrations take place at our Sunday school that includes Christmas programme cum annual day, get-together and gifts! This year too our annual day programme saw our tiny-tots, kids and teenagers display their talents through action songs, dances, skits and medleys. Our associate pastor Rev. Dr. Sarah Matthew distributed the Christmas gifts.
